Delivering first-class customer service has always been important to us at ENWCML and never more so than at this exciting time for the industry. As we all move towards a low carbon future it’s important that there is support available to facilitate this transition. ENWCML are uniquely positioned to offer support in the design, construction and operation of traditional electricity distribution assets at the same time as offering the same service for low carbon technology and services. As CEO, Marks role is to support our team as we grow our business to help deliver a low carbon future for the UK.
We asked Mark some questions about his background and a typical day in the life of a CEO:
Name: Mark Williamson
Position: CEO
What is your role at ENWCML?:
In my role as CEO, I support our business in delivering first class customer service to all of our customers, whatever their needs. I bring over 30 years of experience in the industry coupled with a wealth of leadership experience. The most important aspect of my role is supporting the development of the ENWCML team, giving them the confidence to continue to drive our business forward. This is the most exciting time to be involved in the electricity distribution industry as it is at the heart of the decarbonisation of the UK and our team offer a wide variety of solutions to industrial and commercial customers on their individual journeys towards zero-carbon.
What is your past experience/background?
Having started my career at GEC Alsthom, I joined Norweb in 1990 and have now been with the company for over 30 years. I am a chartered engineer and a member of the Institute of Directors who has undertaken almost every engineering role available in the electricity distribution industry. I became CEO of ENWCML in 2020 to support its growth ambitions to be a leading provider of both traditional electricity distribution equipment services whilst also offering customers low carbon technology solutions.
What do you enjoy about the work you do?
I enjoy working with people and seeing them develop as part of my team. I remember key people who have supported me during my career, giving me their time and insight into their experiences and this has always stayed with me. I enjoy nothing more than seeing colleagues who work with me develop and further their careers.
This is also the most exciting and challenging time to be in the electricity distribution industry given its vital role in supporting the UK in the drive towards net-carbon zero, with the pace of change like nothing I’ve seen in the 30+ years I’ve been working in it. I am enjoying this challenge immensely and still learning new things constantly as new technology and solutions emerge.
Is there anything that the industry must deal with that you can help to fix?:
This is the most challenging and exciting time to be in the electricity distribution industry as we sit at the centre of the drive towards net-zero carbon. With our experience and knowledge, we can help customers meet these challenges by not only helping them to design and build the infrastructure, we can also control, operate and maintain it on a long-term basis. I believe that we are uniquely positioned given the range of solutions that we are able to offer our customers.
Any previous work achievements which you are proud of?
I am always proud when I have helped one of my colleagues further their career when they have worked with me, passing on my experience and insight.
I am also very proud to be leading the company at the time of the COVID-19 pandemic and to see the way in which our teams have continued to provide solutions to our customers by adapting our working methods or solutions to meet their needs. The adaptability of our team makes me proud to be a part of it.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I like to relax by listening to music and enjoy watching sport, particularly football and cricket. I am a lifelong Manchester United fan and season ticket holder and a season ticket holder at Lancashire County Cricket Club.
I also enjoy trying to keep fit, through cycling and walking (my knees are too worn for running), which has a nice new focus as we have our first dog in our family.
